Kmart Card Information Breach
Spirit of Alaska FCU was just notified a malicious form of a virus infected a Kmart payment data system. No personal information was compromised (ie name, address, SSN, etc). However, thieves obtained debit and credit card information between the dates of Sept 2016 through April 2017.
How you can respond:
If you have used your Spirit of Alaska debit or credit card at a physical Kmart store during this period, we encourage you to contact us for a new card. Kmart.com transactions were not impacted by the breach.
Breach Details
The breach involved malware designed to steal credit and debit card data from hacked point-of-sale (POS) devices. The malware copies account data stored on the card’s magnetic stripe. Armed with that information, thieves can effectively clone the cards and use them to buy high-priced merchandise from electronics stores and big box retailers.
Spirit of Alaska highly recommends that our members use our new EMV chip cards. The chip makes it much more difficult for criminals to copy and duplicate a card, and will reduce the occurrence of fraud over the long term.
